IELTS TIPS – HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING

IELTS Listening Tips To Get Band Score Of 9.

There is always a very little advantage when taking IELTS in a country with a large English-speaking population as it is testing your ability to apply your language knowledge in a pressure situation. So, a better band score than the average score for IELTS is the definite way to differentiate yourself, when applying for your preferred college or workplace.

Preparation beyond boundary

Doing deep analyses, devising strategies, and thorough study is important to beat the average score in IELTS.

Challenges in listening

1. Accents

British, Canadian, or Australian are unique in their tongue and pronunciation. Hence familiarising some words are important. For example, “naught” can be zero, failure, or nothing depending on the content.

2. The Audio pace

In the listening exam candidate is allowed to listen to the track only once. Hence once information is missed there is no way to get it back.

3. Distractors

Out of 4 sections, 2 have conversations between more than 2 people in which information changing as the audio progresses.

4. Multi-tasking

Listening reading and the writing need to be done simultaneously and the period of concentration needs to be extended at this test.

5. Different Type of Instructions

The correct answer is not only the one you find but which is written according to the instruction given: choose a letter from the list or maybe write the answer in words. If the instructions are saying to write the answer in two words, how you would convert a number? For example, you may write 1962 in figures rather than writing nineteen hundred and sixty-two which is more than 2 words. Transferring answers correctly into the answer script too is important along with correct spelling as the autocorrect will not be facilitated.

Tips to score better in IELTS listening

Know the Test

Different skills will be assessed in each section.

Section 1

There will be questions and answers from two people in a telephone or face to face conversation. The candidate will have to fill in blanks in a table as per the word count suggested. Further, there will be fill in the blanks questions with basic information. This section is much easier to do.

Section 2

In this section, the person: professor or manager will dictate detailed instructions to a person: student or employee to follow, from which you will be asked to find matching information or fill in the blanks with a specific word count.

Section 3

It will be a discussion between a group of people based on a presentation or a current academic topic. The questions will be tricky as you will be asked to choose the correct answer.

Section 4

This section tests your ability to comprehend complex phrasing and vocabulary as the speaker will talk about a study on a current issue or a scientific discovery, from which you will have to grab core ideas to answer questions about the issues brought to light in the speech.

Use of Distractors

Distractors are used to test your attention span and to make you follow the dialogue thoroughly in which you have to be sure of the answers without panicking or wondering whether you got it right or wrong.

How to utilize the 30 seconds before the beginning of the audio

Correct analysis of instruction before starting: underline the keywords. Write the answer with a maximum of two words (not more than two words) or write the answer at least in two words (more than a word) that mean different things.

Skim through the questions to underline keywords in the questions to quickly establish the kind of answer needed.

Identifying and predicting the type of answer for each question: name, a number or a city may help you to listen for the right answer in the audio.

The Various Types of Questions

. Multiple choice

. Matching information

. Sentence completion

. Table, diagram, flowchart completion

. Short Answer

Let’s learn how to write the answer

As marking is case sensitive, always use all uppercase or all lowercase.
