TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY FOR IELTS WRITING.


Apart from punctuation, grammar and other writing tools, vocabulary plays a great role in writing as it makes one’s writing more powerful and effective by conveying the exact idea that you wish to express. Right vocabulary gives you more clarity of writing by avoiding vague words. Improving the vocabulary improves the power of writing much easier as you are capable of using synonyms in your masterpiece. Therefore, here are 15 ways to improve your writing vocabulary in your day to day life.


Use New Words


Play with the new word, once you come across it for the first time. Every day, use a new word in your conversation, a journal entry, as an assignment or in a friendly e-mail. Repetitive use of new words often as possible improves your diction.


Read Every Day


Every day, reading a well- written and edited essay, magazine article, book or news articles will increase your vocabulary just like during the school days. In order to improve your thinking and speaking with unfamiliar words, it is a must that one reads nonfictions and technical books along with other types of books.


Use a Thesaurus


Whenever you feel like using a word too often and do not give the right meaning, use a thesaurus to better express and learn new words in your writing process.


Develop Practical Vocabulary


In order to avoid clichés in your writing, try to use trade language or words in a hobby or in a vocation to express a task at hand.


Look up Words You Don’t Know


Whenever, you come across a new word, unfamiliar to you, always refer and see the meaning of it.


Keep a Journal


When writing journal entry for the day or for the week, use new interesting words you learn to improve your writing style.


Identify Empty Words


Identify the empty words that do not sense anything to the reader in your writing and replace them with appropriate new vocabulary. Even for phrases and sentences, using words carefully to express ideas in a sentence can reduce number of phrases and sentences you use to write and communicate.


Diversify Your Reading List


Diversification of daily reading topics: natural science, Shakespeare, contemporary literature, politics, history, philosophy or any other topics that you enjoy, will expose yourself to wide range of new vocabulary.


Do Word Puzzles


Newspaper or magazine word puzzles not only make you enjoy but will boost your vocabulary. Cross puzzles make your brain to work hard on challenges to search your memory of new words, allowing you to move the words in your memory and culminate them in your writing.


Use Mnemonics


Sounding out a word and thinking of funny sentence to match the meaning makes you to remember the new words.

Following an online or in person writing courses help to boost your vocabulary as they use assignments and quizzes to increase fluency and writing skills as they are aimed at essay or creative writing.
