Writing task is based on visual information in the form of tables, charts, diagram, process, Graph, map etc. Writing task is to summarise the main information while comparing data presented in a visual diagram given. 3 steps to score 7 or above: write an introduction, and overview highlighting key features using data given.

In the overview you need to summarise the trends, changes, developments, stages, noticeable features presented in the visual diagram using linking words: overall, in summary, etc. under trends summarise overall fluctuations in the visual diagram and show future trends and prediction from it while highlighting the change in the overall trend if any. Key features are the elements that stand out in the diagram that you need to use data: figures, numbers, percentages, buildings, structures, rooms etc. to support your description. For example if the diagram brings out 5 countries you need to use all five countries to avoid incompleteness in the description. In order to gain a band 7 or higher you need use supporting data such as age groups, products, years, noticeable figures that stand out such as high, lows, fluctuation or period of stability. Summarise key figures of increase or decrease, haven’t changed at all or remain the same. Further use names of buildings on a map: shops post office, library etc. including roads, pathways or bridges shown on a map. Further, mention things changed within the visual diagram such as location, renovation, or removal along with the new things: buildings, roads, facilities if any depicted on the diagram. Summarise each stage in a process and any extra steps that could be a part of a process.

Overall, in order to achieve band 7 or higher in IELTS Academic Writing Task 01, make sure you give a clear introduction, write a clear summary in the overview and present and highlight key features with figures given in the relevant diagram. At last, remember that Academic Writing task 01 doesn’t require a conclusion.
